Missing a Gear? Sorry None Spare!

>> Thursday, April 30, 2009

This is a Story of how a young Bushlover hero-worshipped an elder Bushlover. The story starts many years ago when the Ghetto Master was easing off the peak of his DH prowess and Young Jacko was a mere gromm awed by the legend. The ghetto master took Young Jacko under his wing lent the gromm some of his wisdom and skills.

Fast forward 5 or so years and the ghetto master was now a XC jeyboi with new bikes and new parts on them. And still young Jacko worships him. He follows the career path of the great one into cycle couriering. But never fear fellow Bushlove followers, for our young Jacko is no sheep. His heart still beats his own drum, and his path led him toward a worthy steed and discipline. Young Jacko knew that he couldn't get the hang of gears, so he eschewed them and became a singlespeeder. Rumour had it for a while that Davo sheepshanks was mentoring the boy and leading him towards the SS side, but the emergence of young Jacko's shrine to the Slackone put paid to that.

As most of you are all aware, this year Jacko became the Hardest Bushlover, not cos he stole Angry Clive's Viagra stash, but cos he is now the NZ 24hr SS champ. Yet it was not without trepidation that  Young Jacko came to rotorua to race the Rest of the World Singlespeed champs. For he knew that his hero, the great Slack one, would be there also. He knew that even tho the SlackOne had not been riding much since Karapoti, that he would need all his skill and all his reserves of energy to even come close to him.

The Great one Writes: Despite not being a SSér I was really looking forward to this race. In fact I haven't even ridden a SS bike since last years race. But in 18-19 years of racing, this is the funnest race ever, so I had to come back. I hadn't been riding much over the last month and half, instead doing more digging of trails, For to love the bush, is the Bushlove way. But as I walked my way up the road to the start I was motivated. For Ashley had brought some eye candy for the weekend in her older sister or something. Running is not my strong point, but that's how the race started, and after I found my bike everyone took off up the road. Flew past Jacko on his undergeared small wheeled bike, then slowed down cos I felt sorry for him.

That was pretty much the story of the race really. Was impressed at
BGA for going as strong as he did considering he was feeling quite poorly. I gotta say the beer shortcuts are pure genius. Best race idea EVA!!!. The course was far better than last years, and heaps of fun. Still damn hardwork, and I missed my gears an awful lot. Quite often during the race I would help Jacko's confidence by letting him get small gaps on me and ride in front. The kid obviously still hero worships me, which is cute, but gets a bit old.

I got bored of this and took off on the 3rd lap and put some time into him. This may or may not have been cos
Anika was catching up. So  I hammered down, but didn't take the short cut of the 3rd lap cos I knew that I couldn't eat the weetbix due to the whole starch thing. Graciously I took the longer route letting Anika  and Jacko past. Got back onto Jacko,  and let him lead into Pondy. Knowing that I would be faster than him down  the down bits, I let him gap me a bit on the climb, there was no point hurting myself to keep up just to get stuck behind him. He tried to let me past once into Roller coaster, but I knew there was no point in there. Out onto the road and I let my bigger gear pull a gap out. I pulled out a wee lead on Jacko till half way thru Old chevy, when his desire to be near me overcame his tiredness and he caught back up and stuck onto my wheel.

Coming into the last shortcut and I knew with
Jacko's experience in deepthroat and resulting lack of a gag reflex he'd be able to scarf a weetbix pretty quickly, so I drank the beer as quick as I could. Which was not overly fast as I prefer to savour my beverage's. I could see him getting everything down pretty quick, so using my sneaky racecraft I made my way to the empties bag aligning my bike so that Jacko was trapped in. Mwahahaha. Thus creating an advantage I knew I could hold due to my larger gear and faster spin and general allaround awesomeness. And I crossed the line 1 spot up on Jacko. 3rd bushlover across the line after Dr Nick and Dave Kabush.

Young Jacko has been unreachable for his race report as not only is his mum not in teh country to make his food and clean his clothes, and he's just downright inconsolable with the loss to the Great One. Apparently he thought that he'd be able to beat his hero in an event style that his hero doesn't ride often at all, and that he does. In fact he feels so bad that he's leaving the country this Sunday and will be attempting to make his mark upon Canada. He doesn't seem to get that it's socially unacceptable to pee on trees to mark his territory, the poor chap.

Unbridled Pleasure In Belmont Park

>> Tuesday, April 21, 2009

Flawless weather, an entertaining route and good company, made for an excellent outing on Saturday morning, in and around Belmont Regional Park.

8am and the chaps rocked up at my house in ultra-suburban Aotea. Tiger, Nicko and Kah turned up in the cars whilst the infinitely harder Clive and Pete road in (see what I did there) from Karori. After a bit of banter and the boys making threats to do mad skids on my freshly laid lawn, we hit the trail.

Hitting the trail doesn't take long from my place. About 150m up the road you can drop onto the reserve track which heads along the stream on a 4wd all the way to Porirua station. We didn't go that far though and peeled off and up to Cannons Creek lakes before taking the right fork to the Takapu Road end. From the end of Takapu Road we thought the best plan (considering Kah and Nicko had singlespeeds) was to ride the granny gear grind up Takapu (Heartbreak) Ridge. On the Belmont Park map this is marked as a 'route' but is clearly defined and easy to follow, if not easy to ride.

My cunning plan was two fold. A - Burn off Nicko on his singlespeed as he always seems to hammer me out riding. B - Give Nick a mental breakdown by taking him on a route which usually has a reasonably sized herd of cows loitering on it. Nicko hates cows. He feels very threatened by them (in stark contrast to sheep - who feel very threatened by Nick). The plan was he would be dropped early on the SS and therefore be on his own to deal with them, with only Kah to use as bait/distraction.

Sadly there were no cows out. Let alone the herd with 'frickin lazer beams on their heads' which I hoped would be around to give Nick the good news.

Angry, Tony and me made good ground up the exhausting, slippy and long grassy pinches and gained height rapidly. However we were denied the warm shelter of the blanket of glory, as some land-mines caused wheel spinning on the last very steep sections and we were thwarted to a walk. Pete was close behind and Kah and Nick were not close behind. If you have not been up this route it is a good outing. A little tough but rewarding. give it a try.

The tops were beautiful. Great views out across Kapiti and across Welly harbour and the Orongorongos. Just a light breeze. We cruised around the Dress Circle towards Belmont trig and then headed down Honeysuckle Ridge. This track used to be narrower and has been widened by ranger Hoz to allow access to the valley with a quad bike. It is a long descent and we loved it. the constant width means there is plenty of opportunity for mildly aggressive overtaking, late braking and steaming into the bushes and off the sides. Also long enough to BBQ Nicko's brake pads. We'd definitely recommend this descent, especially with a few mates to elbow into the bush on the many switchbacks.

The wonderful and technical stretch along Koro stream was not without chuckles or incident. Nicko was riding point, with me closely behind. Splash. No sooner had I heard it when I saw Nicko lying on his side in the creek. He jumped up so fast to get back on his bike and was ashamed that he had been spotted doing such an epic fail on such an innocuous root. Further long we enjoyed trying a different line on the tree crossing. A nimble gain of the old tree piece that ramps into the creek, leads to feelings of rapture as you splash into the creek, duck the next tree and rejoin the track. Much better then the usual carry over the tree trunk. Check out Tiger Tones, Bushlove's foremost exponent of this fun line.

video

We climbed up to Oakleigh St via a photo-shoot for Playgirl at the Koro Dam, not realising we would be 'out-studded' by Marco minutes later. Mr Mora headed for home whilst we continued, to catch up with the Godfather of Hard. The Godfather was hard at work on his nice new retaining wall. He was itching to show us some local tracks. Sounds great we thought, lets do it. If he asks you to sample them, don't leave home without a locator beacon and a machete.

It was getting a bit late, especially for those who had made outlandish promises to they who must be obeyed, that they would perform a variety of chores or watch children. Tones and Clive headed back from Stratton St. I tried to sandbag them into riding up Middle Ridge but they ended up wrong turning and taking an easier option. Me, Godfather, Kah and Nicko headed up Danzig to ride Chopper and Big Weta. But we were all pretty tired and Kah had started crashing on uphill corners, signifying his shanks' lack of enthusiasm for much more climbing.

Godfather Of Jungle MTB Parks headed down Chopper and we headed for Round Knob and home. It was a grand end to a great ride, as we contoured round the Dress Circle in the hazy sunshine, traversed under the Knob and dropped back down to my place for a well earned coffee (stovetop of course) and a battle for the remaining cookies in the jar.

So, not a race report this time. But as one of the most 'win' mtb rides I've had in ages, I wanted to document it. We'll be doing plenty of other cracking rides over winter. Sometimes long sufferfests and sometimes shorter, easy frolics. Emphasis on a good time every time. We'll try and pop alerts on Vorb maybe, and likely through the Godfather's PNP spam emails. Come along and share your banter and lollies with us.

See you on the trails.

Davo

PS - Thanks to Ian for his continuation of our man Waghorn's good work, in developing the Tracks database we have hyperlinked above. http://www.tracks.org.nz/ Nice one Ian. An excellent resource.

How I Won The SS 24hr Championships

>> Thursday, April 9, 2009

Yo! Jack 'Whacko' Whattam here. I thought it was about time I did another post, and what better occasion than to tell you all about what it took to win my recent SS 24hr NZ Championship.

When I'm not crashing into cars or eyeing up milf on the train, I'm building up my PMA. That's right losers, the difference between me and you is a Positive Mental Attitude. It is just not enough to have shanks like a race horse (which I do) or a butt so tight you could bounce a coin of it (like mine), you need to be able to visualise yourself on the track, having a good time, lap after lap. When the demons descend during the night and weaker riders are pulling the pin and taking naps, I like to imagine I am riding on a tropical beach, drinking pina-coladas, being chased by local island girls while I rapidly deliver some outsize parcels to difficult commercial addresses.

I am blessed with great technical ability, which is important as in a 24hr race there is no room for error when you get tired. Although it looks a lot like I am piloting a wheelchair down the stairs when I ride singletrack, I am actually trying purposely to make each metre of trail more difficult because there are very few trails that challenge me. Sometimes when a trail is simply too easy for me, I like to pull a fast wheelie and flip the bike landing on my back clipped to the pedals. I like to call this the Whacko-Stacko.

Don't try a 24hour solo without getting your wardrobe dialled. It is hard to win without a pair of really high socks. I like to buy tights and cut them short. They just don't make sport socks high enough for me. Also helps to wear a small cap with your event printed underneath the peak. This way when you get pretty tired you can remind yourself what class you are in. And don't forget to write L & R on the appropriate shoes.

I really enjoyed my first 24hr Solo and you can too if you follow the above simple rules. Training is overrated so don't bother. I didn't train for the solo I didn't have time, what with work and stuff. I had to get by on a weekly ration of a mere 350-400kms on a fixed gear bike with bars so short I have to put one hand on top of the other. Perfect for doing Whacko-Stacko's in the traffic.

So now you see it is easy to do well in thee events as long as you follow a few simple rules and try and be more like me.

Till next time sportsfans.

Whacko Jacko - Endurance Monkey.

Bushlove's Most Grand Traverse

>> Tuesday, April 7, 2009

Sunday the 5th was a busy day for the mighty, fun loving, Bushlove Racing Team. We had riders in the PNP Champs in Wainui, the Highlander Enduro in Vegas, and Tiger and Davo in the Porirua Grand Traverse. Was there another team competing more succesfully in more events in the North Island than the BLRT?

The PGT is a multisport race with a popular duathlon option which bikes 30ish kms to Porirua from Battle Hill, then has a tough run over some very testing terrain for about 20kms.

Tony was racing as a team with Glen Hughes, a talented mountain runner (2nd in 2008 NZ Mountain Running Champs!) who he knew from when he was actually fit. Davo was doing the bike and run himself and was hoping for a taste of the podium after being 5th in 2008.

Tiger was actually on time picking Davo up which considering the clocks changed was amazing, as this had been earmarked as fail number one. Upon arrival at Battle Hill, our intrepid Bushies caught up with Hiskey for a warm up and a natter before briefing and the gun...

Being used to the quick start of an XC race, the seasoned MTB specialists rushed forward and Hiskey led, followed closely by Davo, Tones, Nick Waring and Dave Rowlands. Mr Rowlands showed his hand early and got a furlong ahead on the start of the Pukitiro Loop climb. Hiskey, Mr Waring, Tones and Davo followed a short distance back until Hiskey and Mr Waring moved a few lengths up, the elastic broke and our Bushies Tiger and Davo were on their own with a comfy and growing gap back to the field. Davo interrupted Tiger's panting with casual comments like "stay on it" and "pull them back", and Tiger muttered some incoherent drivel that sounded like his 20 month old daughter complaining.

The climb was a great start and broke the field up nicely. Tiger had clearly improved since his 2007 effort, where random ladies perusing Women's Weekly, were passing him on the Pukitiro slopes. The long climb was followed by a nice little ridge descent with a huge crosswind and another longish climb. Before the main descent started Davo signaled his wise intention to let Tiger go, and save some gas for the run. The fireroad downhill to Flighty's Road was great - Loose, loose, loose. Davo nearly bought the farm on one of the off camber corners and held back a little bit more. Bald Conti Speedkings have no win on such descents. Tones smashed down it and his fancy carbon Merida 5000 was tracking and handling well after switching to a shorter stem. When he hit the Flighty's tarmac he locked out the shocked and opened up the taps.

Nearing the top of the Belmont Road climb Davo heard Tones a few corners up when he hollered a traditional Bushlove warcry. Too far away to catch him though as we were not far from the descent to Porirua, from which point places should hold firm.

Tiger arrived in transition in 4th place, a few mins ahead of Davo. Glen shot off and despite seeming to have forgotten his calves, motored off towards the climb. Tiger helped Davo through transition. Davo emptied his tranny bucket of run shoes and bottle belt and headed across the college field towards the bastard climb from Camp Elsdon to Colonial Knob via the steps of doom.

By this time Glen, Tiger's run mate, was probably nearly home. He was runniing to a smashing of the course record by 7 minutes. Crazy stuff.

Davo felt pretty great heading over the hard initial climbs but by the time he reached the beach he was flagging. He had not run for longer than an hour for about 6 weeks thanks to a back injury. It was no coincidence that once through the one hour mark, he was on the rack and his quads were threatening to explode into vicious shankgasms. Davo got nudged back into third along the beach by ace endurance man, Michael Beaumont. A very nice guy who when competing looks not unlike a threatening Roman warrior.

D-Banger was still 'enjoying' the event at this stage. But after a few kms of beach running and the next climb he was dehydrated and did a bit of a puke from the effort. It all unravelled from here and Davo was passed frequently, especially by team runners.

Tiger was going to be passing up a bottle at the Titahi Bay beach. Davo was out of water at this point and suffering like a dog. Davo had not explained himself properly and Tiger didn't know the area. Tones was a no show. Bugger. Mid way up the grim pinch climb in the Titahi cliffs ther was some dry reaching. Not good.

Fleur Pawsey passed Davo on his way down to Porirua estuary. At exactly the same place as in 2007. A reminder of zero improvement in a whole year for Davo. He looked pretty bent out of shape by the time he reached the water and the mask of pain was firmly afixed. A generous marshall gave him a bottle. Gold. A few hundred meters later there was Tiger. Wrong beach, wrong boat sheds, but Davo was still over the moon to see a friendly face.

Tiger rode with the hobbling/walking/nearly crawling Bushlover, past the kayak transition and out around the estuary to the finish. Davo had sworn he would never walk the road section this year. Fail.

All in all a great day out for the team, with Tony and Glen winning the duathlon Team event by a million miles with 3hr15mins. Davo finsihed in 8th place in the individual mens duo from 25 finishers, with 4hr32mins. Despite hoping for better, Dave was pleased to finish when he felt so shabby. You always learn more when you struggle to complete, rather than compete.

A couple of funny quotes from the day. Tones overheard a spectator as we passed saying "Is he the last one?". There were a lot of people still on the course at that point. Davo's wife, Amie, said to Tiger "I think it is about time he changed hobbies" after seeing the state of him towards the end. Maybe she has a point. Vin Diesel congratulated Davo for finishing. A lovely gesture, despite how funny and sarcastic it sounded!

Congrats to Tiger and Glen for their win. Also congrats to MJ from On Yer Bike, for her fine win in the womens duathlon and Dave Rowlands for winning the mens duathlon and breaking the mtb course record. More hearty Bushlove congrats to seasoned adventure racing campaigner, Liam "Vin Diesel" Drew who won the Multisport event. Tony guaranteed himself some company at prize giving by bringing forth a bag of cold beers, which everyone enjoyed whilst clapping the younger competitors who were refreshingly taking time out from My Space and texting to try something with more 'win'.

We are lucky in Wellington to have such a fine range of events from promoters like Michael Jacques, Marco "Godfather" Renalli and Shane Ross from Better Than TV. If you only ever do XC Mtb races, think about branching out for some variety and checking out some of the other stuff on offer.

Worth a mention - Many competitors including Tiger, took advantage of the free massage from the ProActive team, and by all accounts they were very good. Check out their website massage, physiotherapy, biometric testing, exercise rehabilitation programmes and more.

Happy Trails.

Arsecakes....

Always being up for a race in Vegas I headed up with Bushlove racing star Mono and ss Hardman Jacko for the 75km race. This was to double as the NZ marathon champs but being unlicensed and there being no ss class no national glory was on the line for this lover of bush. Still living down the shame of rocking gears for the 12hr last weekend I was back on the Titus ss styles.

As always lols where in order on the trip up especially from Whacko who's mum had forgotten to pack his helmet for him. We had a sifty ride in the forest to streach the legs and try (and fail) to set my forks up properly. Whacko and myself got lost, unable to keep up with Mono's pro pace but otherwise was nice getting out in the forest. A big feed of pasta for dinner (it all about the carbo loading) and an early night was in order.

Woke ridiculously early to a clear but cold Rotorua day and drove to the blue lake where the race was to start. With a few minutes to the gun I realise I must have a slow leak in my rear tyre so chucked 50psi in it hoping that would get me through the race. Seeing the Crow has almost no tread and is made to run at just over 20psi it made for some interesting cornering at times.

In what was the strangest start to a race we rode behind a pace car up the tarseal up to a bottleneck where we entered the forest. From there it was a fair amount of gravel roads before we hit any real riding. Despite spinning like a madman was well back in the pack right from the start. Didn't make much progress on the early tracks till Direct road which was one of the few places a ss had any real advantage. Was quite a maing train of xc riders up Direct road so showed them a clean pair of heals (and hairy calves) on the climb. From there it was into Frontal one of the best ss climbs in the forest. Billy T and Split ends where as awesome as ever but then it was back onto plenty of gravel and even some tarseal roads.

Rest of the race was uneventful although at times a bit tedious on the ss. Had a bit of a back and forth battle for 11th/12th overall till we got to the Blue lake where my lack of gears and fitness let him get away. Felt overall my performance was ok though and thoughts changed to a feed and a swim in the Blue lake. My front tire had different ideas though as it arseploded on a gravel road climb near the finish. Looking at the tire it looked like the sidewall had been grazed earlier in the race and had finally decided to give way. In what could only be described to a comedy of errors I struggled to get my wheel off (stupid bolt on skewers) struggled to get my tire off (stupid Stan's) and then found my spare tube had a hole in it (stupid Nick). A kind passing rider offered me his spare tube so eventually after a good 15 minutes was back on the bike. Turned out I was no more than a km from the finish so should have just legged it.

So not the best performance form me but that's racing. Mono had a steamer winning Senior Mens and Whacko did us proud battling on after an epic crash into a tree destroying his borrowed helmet and hurting his shoulder and back. I suspect he will be feeling a little stiff this week. Hopefully that's my puncture for the year out of the way now. Bring on ss nats.

So the Strongest club in the country was slightly down on numbers for the Club Champs in Wainui on Sunday, what with the highlander on up in Vegas, and lots of dirty multisporters doing the grand traverse. But never fear for the better looking bushlovers were on hand to partake in the fantabulous Wainui trails. Ash lined up and took 2nd in snr women, she's getting faster and lippier by the week. Angry became the Masters 1 club champ after the Yoga Master and I slid up to Pro on the start line.

Lining up at the start and Marco was trying to get more people into Pro as only 2 people were lined up. Big Gav and the BGA. My arm was twisted and upon realising I would get the 3rd place by default, I lined up for an extra lap of pain. Yoga, then put the kaibosh on that by lining up too. Buggar, have to actually make a race of it.

Struggled to figure out my front gears for a second, but after like a pedal or 2, I was a million miles off the front. I think the others all started in granny or something. Thats the only reason I can think of why they were so slow off the start. Of course as soon as it wwent up, Gav, BGA and Yoga cleared off. My back was feeling a tad tight, with it still suffering from the last month and a half ( an afternoon of digging and moving massive rocks didn't help either), so I let them take off and set into a nice pace with old man whippet Marco tailing me up the hill. As soon as it went downhill I think Marco stopped for a cuppa or something, and I opened up the taps, knowing that Gav and Yoga would be long gone, but BGA would be struggling as the gradient was steeper than 5 degrees. Felt a bit gumby going down Labyrinth for bit but got my flow on soon, and opened the taps a bit coming down Beeline. Passed Yoga holding a breathing and stretching class with Tryfan and Jude, and the back up Jungles, heard BGA up ahead on the switchbacks, but never saw him, and at the start of the ECNZ climb he had approx 30secs on me. Saw him well up the road. Coming down spponhill and well opened up the taps and crept up on Al near the bottom, much to his horror. We held hands back past the school for another lap of suffering on the crazyman climb. Once more he took off, but I kept seeing him on the same bits on the climb as I had on the first lap. Back down the hill again and had good flow and pace, All the slower riders were awesomely fantastic at letting us faster riders thru. Back onto the ECNZ climb, and BGA had about a min on me, which was going to be big ask to pin back as he's pretty feirce on that sorta climb, and I was starting to feel the pinch. Back at the top of the last downhill and I just let her Rip. Hickie let me trhu nice a kindly like, and I chased a young flat pedaled Grom on a low seated reign down the bypass, on my high seated 29ér. Got past him when he pulled up for some slower riders and I snuck a sneaky inside line. Ripped past a few other riders as well. Flew past Callum Dunn on his mum's bike for the day, but rode the last 2 switchbacks like a gumby. Hitting the final grass feild and I saw BGA jumping the fence at the other end, so had caught up at least 40 odd secs on the DH . EAsed thru the last road section as was well ensconced in my place.
Found out a tthe end, that not only had Yoga had a mechanical but had fully fluffed the course up on the second lap so gifted me 3rd regardless.

Teh tracks up Wainui have always been good, but at the moment they are riding super sweet.

Nice wee medal haul for the bushlove crew at this race, 3 medals, outa 3 riders. Mine was pink and matched my "not ghey at all" bushlove wrist sweatband.

Mono's Highlander

After a fairly average Karapoti I decided to put a bit of effort into the next race on my calendar for 2009 - the NDuro Highlander. 75km of primo Rotorua trails (Well, maybe 30km of primo trails and a fair bit of 4wd). This would also be the first race for me on my lovely new Litespeed Obed 29er.

Even during the week I wasn't 100% sure if I would even make it, due to work commitments, but luckily for me I was able to head up Saturday morning with Nicko and Whacko. Shortly after arriving we decided to head out for a wee ride in the forest to get a feel for the trails and wake the legs up after the long drive. This was when Whacko found out he had left his helmet at home... many lulz ensued, followed by a decision by whacko to ride sans helmet. After a small ride we had a feed and eventually headed for bed for some much needed sleep.

The morning of the race dawned fine - clear skies, no wind, and not too warm (yet). After an SOS call to Dean from Wide Open to bring a helmet for Whacko we were on our way to the Blue Lake, the Start/Finish for this race. The Highlander race included the NZ MTB Marathon Champs, which used the same course, and there were also 40km and 20km options for those not wishing to suffer as much.

After some excellent pre-race sifting and a double short black (cup'o'win) I headed to the start line with the rest of the 75km racers. After a neutralised start up the road (wtf?!) we hit the dirt. Because of the traffic jam at the start everyone was very tightly bunched, and almost immediately we were riding along in a huge dust cloud - I could feel it in my mouth, nose and eyes. After a bit of jostling we reached the first singletrack - Be Rude Not 2. An awesome trail, normally super fun and scarily fast in parts. Normally. Unfortunately a couple of non-thrillseekers made it into the trail in front of me, and we rode at a fairly cruisy pace. I hollered at them to up the pace a bit or let me pass, which was met with a better pace for the next 50m, before slowing again. Grrrr. Out of BRN2 we were meant to head up "Lion Trail", but I could see around 5 riders in front heading up "Pig Track" (Which is a couple of minutes faster to the same point). I turned up towards Lion and passed the group I had been riding with so far. Up Lion, along to Turkish Delight, then down and into the lower part of Genesis, all on my lonesome, trying hard to catch the lead bunch. I figured they would be miles ahead already after the pace we rode down BRN2 at... oh well. Through Genesis, then Challenge, and into Grinder (Awesome fun) before getting into the end of Creek Track. At the start of Creek I heard someone behind me, who turned out to be Rotorua legend and New Zealand Singlespeed Champ Garth Weinberg. We had a bit of a natter through here, then carried on up to Mad If U Don't. From here the course flattened out a bit, and I put a bit of a gap on Garth (Seeing as he only had 1 gear!). Along Nice Road and into Sweet & Sour. This was part of the North Island Cup XC course in January, so I went pretty well along this bit. Upon reaching the top of Sweet & Sour we had the first climb of the day, up Direct Road and Frontal Lobotomy on out way up to Billy T. I went OK up here, and managed to maintain the gap I had on Garth.

Into Billy T, and I was really looking forward to seeing how the big wheels would handle this trail. On my previous XC bikes it's always felt like a bit of a battle getting down here. With the climb over and the big wheels up to speed I was really enjoying myself - there was oodles of traction in the corners, and my mad huck skills were in full effect. I was having such a good time down here - I may have made some "WOOOOOO" noises, but I don't think anyone heard. After the short climb up to Split Endz I kept the pace going, and had an awesome run down. While it's a sweet trail, I'd never really nailed it as fast as I should have until yesterday. Cue more "WOOOO"...

Continuing this awesome combo of downhill trails is Pondy DH. I've never been at all fast down here, because some of the braking bumps are just so damn rough I was afraid I'd break something on the bike. On the 29er, yes I could still feel them and get thrown about a bit by them, but could carry so much more speed through the trail. At this point Garth caught back up (I was getting bored talking to myself anyway) and into Pondy New we had another gas bag. Pondy New was uneventful, as was Rollercoaster. Into Old Chevy, which is a favourite of mine - very undulating, lots of small sharp climbs, and fast flowy downhills. I still had Garth near, so made sure I gave it some gas when I could. Through the feed zone at the end of Old Chevy and straight into Yellow Brick Road - easily the nicest climb in the forest. After Yellow Brick Road we had a long 4wd section to the top of the last climb. Garth and I rode side by side for a heap of it, and he pointed out where they spray poos onto the pine trees in the forest. With a bit of yo-yo style, he eventually started getting a gap on me, and by the top had around 30 seconds advantage.

The last real descent of the day, No Brains, kept me on my toes, especially the double log rollover bit at the end. I had an epic spill last time we raced this trail, so I was pleased to get to the exit without any dismounts. Once on the road I saw Garth had about 50 seconds on me, and I pushed hard to reel him in on this fast section. I didn't see him again.

The last part of the course involved a couple of short, sharp climbs, before putting us on a 4wd track skirting the Green Lake. While it was fairly easy track, the small undulations made it feel tough. I knew there was one more small climb, only a few minutes long, before the finish. Out of food, low on fluid and cramp-stop in hand, I tackled the last few kms at a reasonable pace. The walking track we got to ride at the very end was great - roots, steps, fast bits, slow bits - a great way to finish a ride. Through the finish area I could only see a few racers loitering - some of the Marathon Champ racers had already finished, and Garth ended up a few minutes ahead of me. I think I was 7th(?) overall, but not sure. My goal was to ride the 75km in under 4 hours (Last year I rode 80km in 4:28). I rode 3:37, so well under the 4 hour target.

I stood around talking some more, watching other racers cross the line, all in various states of pain. Some looked a little sore and tired, others were completely broken, struggling to get off the bike.

Turns out Nicko punctured about 1km from the end, and his spare tube had a hole in it... so he lost a huge chunk of time waiting for someone with a tube to come by. Once he finished we grabbed our towels and headed to the lake for some Brokeback Bushlove. Seriously, a swim in the cool water was one of the best ways to finish the day.

We figured Whacko must have stopped for a pie and a ciggie, but eventually he rolled in, looking a little stiff*. He had an epic spill early in the race, hurting his back a bit. Apparently when you head-butt a tree and thereafter have an unscheduled dismount for the purposes of lying down for some time, it can cause you to forget things. Jack thought he'd hit his shoulder - the HUGE cracks through the (borrowed) helmet suggest his head was more likely given the good news first. Ouchies. Whacko sought comfort from fellow single speed nutter Garth, who prescribed vodka and ibuprofen. Nifty.

Unknown to me, the organisers had split the Marathon Champ "Open" class and the Highlander "Open" class... so when my name got called at prize giving I was a little surprised. Still not sure on overall placing, but 1st in Open Men in the NDuro Highlander is a decent result.
